Amendments to the Democratic Memory Law facilitate access to Spanish nationality with online tools for appointments at Consular Offices.
The General Directorate of Legal Security and Public Faith has introduced an important modification to the Instruction of October 25, 2022, to make the process for descendants of people exiled or persecuted during the Civil War and the dictatorship to obtain Spanish nationality more accessible.
This regulation, framed in the eighth additional provision of Law 20/2022 on Democratic Memory, has been updated to incorporate telematic tools in the management of requests, announced the Aristeo Group Recently.
You can now apply online.
The main new feature is the ability to process appointment requests at Consular Offices online. This will streamline the process and ensure a more efficient process.
Thanks to this improvement, applicants wishing to apply for Spanish nationality will be able to schedule their appointment online. They will also be able to identify themselves and record the date and time of their application.
The new online appointment system will allow Consular Offices to manage requests more efficiently. The goal is to avoid long waits and speed up processing for users. This will not only optimize the internal organization of the offices, but also ensure that each request is processed in an orderly manner and in the shortest possible time.
According to the information provided by these experts, once the appointment request is submitted through the online platform, the system will issue an acknowledgment of receipt that will serve as proof that the request was submitted within the timeframe stipulated by the Democratic Memory Law.
Spanish nationality by option
The objective of this amendment is to simplify and make more accessible the process of obtaining nationality by option, particularly for those applicants residing outside of Spain. It seeks to ensure that all descendants of exiles and victims of the dictatorship who meet the legal requirements can exercise this right fairly and without obstacles.
In a response from the Aristeo Group to a reader, they clarified that "to request an appointment at the consulate for optional citizenship or other consular procedures, you typically do need previously issued credentials."
"These credentials are essential to verify your identity and confirm that you meet the established requirements before scheduling your appointment," they added.
The new regulations will come into force the day after their publication in the State official newsletter.

I just want to know what will happen to people who have been waiting for credentials for more than 6 or 7 months. Would that appointment apply to everyone, including people who are already waiting for their credentials and who have been delayed for a long time?
Good morning, the problem is that here in Cuba the credentials take too long, I myself have been waiting for 9 months and nothing, the consulate has been waiting for more than 4 months since December of last year and it seems that they do not plan to finish this year, the process is very difficult and time-consuming here in Cuba and then waiting for volume and folio, that is another 8-month wait
