SNAP Benefits: Can I Use Them in Another State?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides invaluable financial assistance to millions of families in the United States. By paying around $180.00 USD per month, you have the possibility of maintaining a balanced and healthy diet. But can I use my cupfood in another state? We'll tell you.

According to the law, if you're a SNAP recipient, you can spend your money in another state. In fact, since this is an interoperable program, your SNAP income is valid in all 50 states. In other words, with your EBT card, you can purchase food at any authorized retailer.

These cases happen very frequently. Residents need to travel to another state for whatever reason and there they can use their cupfood trucks, as they are known. They even travel to other border states to take advantage of retail store sales.

Added to this are the logical personal, work, and family situations. This is the case for SNAP beneficiaries who must travel for an emergency or simply cross state lines for work.

Federal regulation 7 CFR 274.8 (b) (10) covers these transactions in other states. The EBT system must allow the redemption of benefits issued using an EBT card in any state.

Do not abuse the law

It's clear that you can use your SNAP benefits to buy food in other states. But you must be careful not to abuse the law that protects you. Remember that constant and prolonged use of your EBT card in another state can raise red flags for the program.

Your agency might consider you've moved out of state, and this could cause problems. Whenever you can, avoid these types of situations.

Under SNAP rules, if you've moved to another state, you must cancel your benefits where you previously lived and reapply for SNAP in your new location.
