Finally, following the Argentine oil company's refusal to supply Cubana de Aviación at Ezeiza Airport in Buenos Aires, Cuba completely suspended flights to Argentina after decades of uninterrupted connections.
Cuba and Argentina have been without direct connections since May. First, Aerolíneas Argentinas, following the rise to power of right-wing Javier Milei, decided to stop flying to Havana, citing "low demand," and now Cubana de Aviación has been forced to suspend these flights to Argentina because it cannot refuel there.
"As a result, Cubana de Aviación has been forced to suspend regular flights between Cuba and Argentina, which had been maintained for 39 years," the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrex) said in a statement.
"It is contradictory to proclaim freedom at all costs while restricting the freedom of a company that strictly complies with the regulations of Argentina and the International Civil Aviation Organization." they added.
Cuba completely suspends flights to Argentina
A week ago, the national airline, Cubana de Aviación, was forced to temporarily suspend its flights to and from Buenos Aires, Argentina. We warn that this could completely suspend all connections and leave both countries without a link, and that is what happened.
Cubana de Aviación successfully resumed operations between Havana and Buenos Aires in May 2023, following a pause due to the pandemic. This decision was rewarded with a notable 44% increase in the flow of Argentine tourists to Cuba during the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period the previous year.
The resumption of flights, which even included stops in the paradise destination of Cayo Coco, facilitated connections between the two nations, significantly boosting Argentine tourism to the Caribbean island. However, this has recently been put to rest with the suspension of flights between the two nations.
