Miami: It's revealed that Derek Rosa shared crime scene images with school friends

Derek Rosa allegedly sent photos of his murdered mother's body to friends, according to new evidence from the Miami-Dade prosecutor's office. The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office filed a new motion in the case of Derek Rosa, the teenager accused of murdering his mother, Irina Garcia, in October 2023 inside her apartment in Hialeah.

According to prosecutors, Rosa not only committed the crime with premeditation, but also subsequently sent images of her mother's body to a group of friends through a messaging application.

Court documents reveal that Rosa shared disturbing photos and messages in a group chat involving several high school classmates.

This new evidence, which includes images, messages, and videos, seeks to demonstrate the mental state of the accused, as well as his intent and planning before the murder.

According to the prosecution, weeks before the crime, on September 30, 2023, the young man allegedly sent his friends an extremely graphic video in which a U.S. Army reservist takes his own life with a firearm.

Her friends reacted with surprise and rejection, while Rosa apparently downplayed the content and accompanied it with messages that prosecutors describe as disturbing.

The evidence also indicates that on October 11, the day before the murder, Rosa spoke with a friend identified as CG —also a minor— about Halloween costumes.

During the conversation, he reportedly expressed interest in dressing up as Jason, the iconic character from Friday the 13th, known for using a machete as a weapon.

On the day of the murder, October 12, 2023, Rosa allegedly showed the suicide video to her girlfriend again while they were on the school bus, laughing and calling it "funny".

According to the prosecution, the minor ended her relationship hours before the murder occurred.

After the crime, Rosa allegedly sent photographs of her mother's corpse to several friends, including CG, whom she also called repeatedly to ask what he thought of the images.

According to the documents, at first the minor believed it was all a joke, but later Rosa allegedly confessed what had happened and asked if he should take his own life.
