The American automaker Ford announced a massive recall affecting nearly 1,5 million vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2019 due to a faulty rearview camera. The defect can cause the screen to appear blank or distorted when reversing, increasing the risk of accidents.
Reported incidents and NHTSA alert
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), at least 18 incidents related to the problem have already been reported, although no injuries have been reported. The agency noted that the defect limits the driver's visibility and, therefore, increases the likelihood of collisions when reversing.
In a statement, the agency explained that "the camera image may not accurately reflect what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of collisions."
Models affected by the recall
The recall campaign includes a broad list of Ford and Lincoln cars manufactured between 2015 and 2019:
- Lincoln Navigator
- Lincoln MCC
- Ford Mustang
- Ford Ranger
- Ford Transit and Transit Connect
- Ford Econoline
- Ford Edge
- Ford expedition
- Ford F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD and F-550 SD
All owners will receive written notifications confirming whether their vehicle is subject to recall and coordinating a free inspection at authorized dealerships.
A record number of withdrawals in 2025
With this announcement, Ford now has 110 recalls in 2025, the highest figure recorded by a manufacturer in a single year. This is almost four times more than Chrysler, whichcupto second place with 30 withdrawals.
In previous months, the company also had to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to problems with the fuel pump, brake systems, and rearview camera software.
Repairs at no cost to owners
Ford assured that inspection and replacement work will be free of charge to customers. In some cases, dealerships will offer pickup, delivery, or mobile service to facilitate the process.
The company has also enabled the option on its website to enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) to check if the vehicle is included in the recall.
Impact on consumer confidence
Repeated recalls have put Ford under scrutiny in an increasingly competitive market. Despite the measures taken, consumer confidence is shaken when technical failures force the recall of millions of cars.
In response, Ford stated that it is strengthening its quality controls with new technologies, including artificial intelligence tools, to detect defects before vehicles reach the market.
The recall seeks to reduce immediate risks, but also reflects the challenges the automotive industry faces in terms of safety and public trust.
